BITD Vegas to Reno

This year’s TSCO “Vegas to Reno” – which is certifiably the Longest Off-Road Race in the United States at 457.5 miles, is already creating excitement among the off-road racing community.

Casey Folks, Director of the Best in the Desert series, said, “2008 has already been a huge growth year for Best In The Desert off road desert racing in terms of participants. We are excited that the TSCO “Vegas to Reno” event, our flagship race, will carry on that momentum. Not only is this going to be a big event but it’s also the 12th running of TSCO “Vegas to Reno.” This race is open to all Best In The Desert classes – cars, trucks, UTVs, quads and motorcycles. And, with the ongoing changes in off-road racing, we expect over 300 entries.”

Folks worked closely with the BLM to set up a course that avoids endangered species, and does not harm the environment. The course just changed to a start area 6.5 miles north of the town of Beatty, Nevada, with all classes off on Friday, August 22nd. Originally part of the Bullfrog Mining District, today Beatty serves as an important gateway to Death Valley, and is 115 miles from Las Vegas. The course traverses a part of the legendary Pony Express Trail made famous 148 years ago, and finishes up east of Reno, Nevada.

The TSCO “Vegas to Reno” race takes racers from the high desert floor at 2,500 feet elevation to mountainous heights of over 9,000 feet, forcing competitors to adjust to the changing pressures, and endure extreme hot and cold temperature variations.

This course features some of the toughest, and most varied terrain in the world.
On the dry lakebed portions of the route speeds over 100 MPH are typical. Racers must fight their way through narrow canyons, boulder lined paths, and deep silt beds.

Pre Fun Run details:
Friday, August 1, 2008 - Pre-Fun Run Registration, 1-night in Beatty
Saturday, August 2, 2008 - Pre-Fun Run starts, 1-night in Tonopah
Sunday, August 3, 2008 - Pre-Fun Run continues

Contingency is set for Thursday, August 21st at the South Point Hotel in Las Vegas,
Nevada. Time Trials for the top 20 starting positions will be Thursday morning, August 21st in Las Vegas. Class 1400 Trick Trucks, and Class 1500 Unlimited Cars only. The traditional BBQ and an after-race party will take place at the awards presentation in Reno on Saturday, August 23rd at the new Terrible’s Sands Regency Hotel.
Off-Road Racing’s Best-Run Series … Best In the Desert!

“Team Ford” Time Trials Pole Award

Las Vegas, NV July, 2008

When Casey Folks announced the exciting new “Team Ford” Time Trials Pole Award from “Team Ford” Steve Olliges, for last year’s TSCO “Vegas to Reno” race, it meant for the FIRST TIME EVER, a $1,000 CASH award would be paid to the fastest qualifier at the Time Trials to determine the overall starting positions for Class 1400 Trick Truck and Class 1500 Unlimited desert race vehicles. And with this race, Olliges is renewing his commitment for the second year.

Steve Olliges, president of Team Ford Las Vegas, stated, “Best In The Desert IS THE ONLY DESERT RACING ORGANIZATION that runs Time Trials for the top starting positions, and I’m proud to step it up with the “Team Ford” Pole Award. I will personally hand a thousand dollars in cash to the fastest qualifier. To qualify for the first starting position, and get $1,000 on top of it….now that’s the way to begin a race!” Casey Folks stated, “Ford Motor Company is a huge sponsor of Best in the Desert, and we appreciate their continuing support. And now Steve Olliges’ announcement of the prestigious “Team Ford” Pole Award only adds to the credibility and stature Best in the Desert races have attained.”

This cash prize, along with a one-of-a-kind trophy, is awarded to the fastest qualifier of the time trials held before each Best In The Desert race for the car and truck classes. The location and terrain of the special five-mile course is a closely guarded secret until the day of the event, this year held on August 21st.

Racers are entitled to one practice lap, and then qualifying begins. Only Class 1400 Trick Truck and Class 1500 Unlimited desert race vehicles entered in the race are eligible to qualify for the overall top starting positions. This unique format truly allows the fastest vehicles, regardless of class designation, to compete on equal ground for a shot at the overall race victory. Since their inception, the Time Trials have been a big hit with the sport’s top desert racers. Now, the “Team Ford” Pole Award takes this exclusive desert racing event to the next level.

Two Serious Accidents Vegas to Reno

Thoughts and prayers from Vtr Racing, re: friends:

Sadly, there were some accidents at this years event. Please keep PRO ATV rider Wayne Matlock in your prayers. He is recovering at the hospital in Reno from a bad wreck. Reports are he should make a full recovery.

Anthony Modica and his friends and family will be needing our prayers, last reports are that he is in a Coma from yesterdays crash near race mile 305. You can visit the District 37 website for latest information on this courageous young man. I know its not what everybody wants to hear but they need all the support they can get. The power of prayer works.
