Help prepping a quad for the Henderson 300 in Dec

Hi Everyone,

My buddy and I are travelling over to do our first race in the USA, the Henderson 300, part of the BITD series. It is 275 miles of desert terrain in Nevada.

We dont have that kind of terrain over here in the UK, so what advice can you give on prepping the quad. I have a Raptor 660 with just skid plates, nerf bars and kill switch at the moment.

We are going to put a +2 axle on it and switch to a twist throttle.

What tires/rims are good for this sort of race. Should we use tireballs? What else should we do to it?

Any help much appreciated. If anyone is going to be there, let me know. Maybe meet up for a beer or 5.

Dean.

Use full skid plates. If you can have the rear beefed up a bit. You dont really need the nerf bars, just a decent front bumper, made by AC Racing preferably lol. Shamless plug! Rims with reinforcement rings are nice to have. Get a steering stabilizer. The Trejo team is great and Scott Mitchell runs a Raptor and can probly give you some advice on how to set it up. If you can get some a arms and suspension work that would be a plus. A nice comfy desert seat too. By the way, its going to be a 400 mile race now!
Also Dean and Justin Waters from this site has prepped a Raptor for desert racing and can probably give you a few pointers. We rode it in the 2003 Vegas to Reno.
We are the Q64, Team Guilty Quad.

Re: Help prepping a quad for the Henderson 300 in Dec

what ever you do for tires USE 6 PLY
I use itp holeshot xc 22 in front 21 in back
dg fat series skidplate on the swing arm, dg makes about 3 different thicknesses of skids fat series is very beefy.
tireballs are nice but not an absolute.
and a twist is very friendly. I did the terribles 250 with a thumb though.

Re: Help prepping a quad for the Henderson 300 in Dec

thumb throtle works well in very techinical terrain...twist works well when roads are long and kind of smooth, have your suspension done and beleive in loctite...a extra set of tierods beefed up of course, steering stabilizer, patch kit, plugs and CO2 to repair tires...cromoly steering stem and some good bars...extra air filters, have some kind of helmet lighting system in case you run late adn you can slip iy on your helmet to finish..23's and 22's for tires and minimum 6 ply .. good luck..

Hey,

If I were you I would stick with the thumb throttle as its easy to use when you ride it wide open and can be more forgiving in the rocks and stuff. Id also grab a K&N airfilter with either a precharger filter cover or outerwears filter cover. Next I'd go with some better tires. Go with either the ITP Holeshot XC's or the ITP Holeshot HD's and run them on ITP T9 series Baja reinforced rims. Id also to check to see the condition of your chain and sprockets and make sure they are in top notch as the desert riding will take a toll on them. If your not riding with aftermarket handlebars and find the stock raptor bend alittle uncomfortable you should look at a set of renthals. Good luck
