Anyone racing a Raptor? YFZ way better?

I have a 2002 Raptor. I am thinking about getting into some racing here in AZ. Mostly desert racing, with some GP type stuff and some playing on MX tracks. I thought I should get a YFZ 450 but those things cost a lot of $$$. Will I end up putting too much into the Raptor to get it race ready? Are the YFZ's set up more for racing and need less after market mods?

Oh, by the way, I'm 6'1" 215 lbs. The YFZ seemed a little cramped for me when I sat on one on the showroom floor.

I have both. For desert and gp I love my raptor. And for mx I like my yfz. I will say if i could use a twist throttle the yfz might be better but the thumb throttle is so stiff it kills. Unless you are planning on getting really serious about racing I would stick to the raptor.

We raced a Raptor for two years in the desert. We liked it but had many reliability problems. Even after being fully built.....

For your size and desert racing you should look at the DS650.

Other than the reliability, how was the size and comfort?

Are you saying that if the thrumb throttle could be addressed on the YFZ, you would prefer it for desert too?

Very comfortable but a little top heavy.

Don't know since the thumb throttle sucks but I think i would still prefer my raptor.

Since you already have a raptor it would be cheaper to fix it up then to buy a new 450.

Extend the a-arms, shocks and an extend axle and you should be good to go.
