3 Wheelers, what was the deal?

I want to know, what exactly was the deal with three wheelers being banned in the late 80's? I know it was about them tipping too much and stupid, non-talented riders. But I want to know the specifics. There is never any chance of three wheelers coming back right? It just makes you wonder where they would be right now. You look back, and they were great machines, but I always wonder where they would be now. I want your insight on this, mostly because I was merely 4 or so when this stupid-a$$ decision was made.

Like you said, it was too expensive to make them i think...restrictions were too much i am pretty sure. I am with you, we would have some sweet asss trikes right now. Dave and his brother of MP racing made a banshee engine/three wheeler frame, i will see if i can go dig up the picture somewhere.

it is actually leagal to make them now...i believe it was a 10 year "agreement" that they would not be made....it was made in 86 so as of 96 they could be made(correct me if the numbers are wrong)...but quads are better so no one does....also n a side note...ITS NOT THE FRICKING GOVERNMETS BUISINESS TO BAN ANYTHING!!! AHHHH!!!! anyway...

I am with you on that 98warrior. Whatever happend to our freedom? The government comes and tells us what we can and cannot do, and that is B.S. I was never aware that it was banned for only ten years. I also thought it was banned in the late '80's, but it was only in '86? I was only 1 year old then. So if the manufacturers desired, they could make them again? And the LT500 ban was stupid as hell to. We should all get together against the government and stand up for our rights to ride and ride what we want. Am I the only one that is sick of this lawsuit sh*t? They won't make them again because quads are better, or is that they are afraid of another lawsuit and this happening again? Just think, '02 Honda ATC 400ex, '02 Yamaha Tri-moto raptor, '02 Ski-Doo DS650 Three wheeler, '02 Yamaha Tri-moto raptor. Would these machines be a reality, would three wheelers still be manufactured if the government hadn't intervened?

Quads are so so much beter the 3 wheelers. I had riden one and man is it every ruff with only the one tire in the front. I don't think anyone one would buy them if they could make them!

i think 3 wheelers would have benn phased out on their own by the FREE market due to the fact that the quads hadnled better so the 3 wheelers would have sold...so if the government left their hands off it would have probably happend anyway and we wouldnt have lost any freedom.....on a side note...know how the governmant has benn working to ban SUVs cuz they suck gas and are "dnagerous"? well guess what it happening now? SUV sales are dropping very rapidly due to the high gas prices...amazing how things happen on their own in a free market....just imagine living in the united states of america as it should be a real FREE nation...think of our economy, it would be great with no government interference...just think if federal income tax was at 7% like it was in 1913...know how much extra money buisinesses would have to invest in new things?? it would be amazing...our nation would be an incredible place...just makes you see how socialist or nation is...sad...and i dont know if we can turn around either...we are many years behind....

If I remember right, the LT500 was built using what was going to be the RM500 motor, but the the AMA stopped the 500 motocross racing so they used the motor in a Quad, and it worked great. They sold more or the quad racers and quad sports so it got fazed out.....

back in the mid 80's there was a law suit brought apon honda by the gov or a victim? don't know which one. they sued honda and honda said they would stop the production of threee wheeled vehicles for 10 years. this either eliminated or reduced the lawsuit amount. it is now legal to make them. but not many would buy them. there some more to it but thats the BASIC'S.

I agree that quads probably handle better, after all they are a 3 wheeler with a training wheel, but I own two 200Xs and a Tecate-3 and have to say they are just as much fun to ride, if not more so than quads. 3 wheelers tend to be a little less bumpy up front since they lack that 4th wheel, and can accelerate more quickly since they weigh about a hundred pounds less.

My first vehicle was a 1982 ATC110 I got for my 13th B-Day in 1983. I only got hurt once on it in the 3 or 4 years I owned it, and that's because a tree stump jumped out at me. I've had dozens of trees jump out at me on my KDX lately.

I love riding the 3 wheelers because everyone says "man you are going to die!" The old classics that started it all can really turn some heads at the track.

I still have my '81 atc 110 and still riding it occasionally. The only thing ever done to it was replacing of the generator and wheel bearings. They are a lot more dangerous though but if you learn how to ride them and what the limits of the bike are, no better, no worse than anything else motorized.

That's why I think three wheelers aren't dangerous, at least not to me. I can never get anyone else to understand that. It's not the three wheelers that are dangerous, it's the retards that rode them. I don't think anything I would ride is dangerous just because I try to be consious of what my limits are and what the bike is capable of. A lot of people are just too stupid to be able to do that.

I must be stupid then man, cuz i know what the bike is capable of, and i know what my limits are, but to have fun, you have to stretch above and beyond those limitations, otherwise the whole world would be one big controlled place(it is just the opposite of that).

I have gotten roosted a few too many times, in the head.

The main reason 3 wheelers don't exist any more is because of all of the law suits brought on by the parents of children who were injured on them. You have a parent put a 12 year old on a 250R and guess what, he gets injured. A couple of years ago, a man was killed on a Honda Quad, and the family sued Honda for all they were worth. Come to find out, the guy was stupid drunk and hit a tree head-on. Fortunately (for once), the lawsuit was thrown out because it wasn't Honda's fault. It was from that point that all of the sport quads starting coming out again, because the companies had finally won a round in court. It's just a shame the courts and Consumer Product Safety Council didn't have the same defeats when it came to trikes years ago.

I'm tired of us Americans having to be protected from ourselves because of a few idiots. Let the "survival of the fitest" kick in, and the idiots will die off, and we'd all be better off. Bring back Lawn Darts (federal offense to play that game now), big metal Tonka trucks, black M-16 toy guns; all the cool stuff I used to play with as a kid.

Sorry, I had to rant. Gotta go get ready to ride tomorrow.....
