Polaris 400 Sport Starter?!

Well, im going to buy a used 97 Polaris 400 sport. Which supposely is in nice shape and rather low hours... Well i called the guy again the other day, but wouldn't ya know the starter just went out, frozen up. He said he thinks its because he hasn't used it in the last year or so. So he went to a dealer and there around 400 bucks, so he is going to get a rebuild much much cheaper... Now my question is, how long will this rebuild last? And is often that a starter will go? I have had a 86 Honda until this winter, and it was used all the time, and the starter never went, same with my 95 Polaris 250.

Thanks a BUNCH!

Re: Polaris 400 Sport Starter?!

The only time i see starters go is when they get water and mud in them but i have never had a problem with mine and mine has seen all kinds of mud and water. it may have gotten wet and then sat for awhile and everything rusted up. 400 bucks for the starter that seems really high. I think the last time i bought one it was somewhere in the 200 dollar range. A rebuilt starter can be better then a new one if it is put together with new parts not just use what is good and sand a few things down to make it work. If it starts when you get it dont worry about it. Good luck

Re: Polaris 400 Sport Starter?!

Thanks alot man
Ha said when he first bought it, in Mississipie, he used it to ride the creeks, but that was over a year ago, and now its been sitting in down here in Florida.
Also. This guy has no title or origanal bill of sales... He said he would make up his own bill of sales, so that it shows he sold it to me... Think this is all legal? And when i go to register it, i wont get screwed?

Re: Polaris 400 Sport Starter?!

most quads and dirtbikes dont have titles...get the serial number and contact the police, they can search to verify it is not stolen. Give as much info as possible, like that it was from Mississippi and now Florida....that is what I did and I also made the guy sign a piece of paper that it was legally his and it was not stolen to his knowledge....

Re: Polaris 400 Sport Starter?!

Like airborn said quads normally dont have a title they have a certificate of ownership which basically is a title. I have never gone to the police to have a vin checked but i do know people that have. Well good luck

Re: Polaris 400 Sport Starter?!

Thanks guys.
Anyone know any good mods i can do for this baby? The guy already has new pipes and silencer, plus a new clutch system. Is it possible to put a winch on it?

Re: Polaris 400 Sport Starter?!

i dont know if they make a winch mount for it but you could make one your self. There are other things that you can do reed spacers, carb, the list goes on and on. I would stay away from the carb though. I have installed a few and every one wants them back off because they love fuel. Good luck

Re: Polaris 400 Sport Starter?!

Gotcha.
I kinda figured the 400 Sport frame would be to weak for a winch. It kind sucks that the 400 is really a 378cc, like most other quads 'Fale advertised cc's' But i think im gonna try and crank it up to 400 real cc's...
Are K&N's worth 40 bucks? What bout' the outterwears? Shock wears worth 15 bucks a peice?

Re: Polaris 400 Sport Starter?!

shockwears seem to be worth it to me...hehe I ordered a set for my shee....as far as the winch...it should be fine...and I would go with a UNIfilter if they make one for it rather then K&N
