Sportsman 500 clunking into gear

I have a 98 that when I shift out of neutral into forward or reverse sometimes I have to rev it up to engage,The dealership thinks it might need ajustments on the belt if so is this a bigger job than on a sled?

Re: Sportsman 500 clunking into gear

First thing i would do is change the belt. It is a little harder to do then a sled but easy enough. While you have it off make sure you didnt hurt the cluths. Look for wear marks in the sides. They should be smooth. One more thing the tranny in a sled and the quad are to totatly different beasts. Good luck

One more thing make sure you idle is high enough. Those 500 motors will idle very low and be too low.

Lower the idle if needed, if not then adjust the rods going from the shifter to the trans, I had to do that to mine, it worked! Good Luck!
