Kodiak 4X4 vs Sportsman 400?

O.K. I have posted a few questions in my never ending decision of what
new quad to buy. I have finally decided to get a new auto 4X4. I have
narrowed it down to the Kodiak or the Sportsman 400. I know the main differences, but can't decide on one. I have ridden both and don't really
have a preference. I have heard Polaris had reliablitiy & maintenance issues. Is that still true? What sort of extra maintenance is needed for the Polaris? Is the rear suspension reliable? Is the Polaris worth the extra cash for the "on-demand" true 4wd and independent rear suspension?

Re: Kodiak 4X4 vs Sportsman 400?

Polaris quads have no maintance problems if the bikes are maintained. Yes they do need more maintance then some of the other bikes. I have seen some bikes just trashed and in my shop all the time. Others that are maintain i see them once a year for a service. The belt breakage thing is rider error. If you get water in the cluthes let it run and idle and dry out(you will know when it is dry.) If all four tires are stuck and can not spin, dont force them to, that will hurt the belt also. I can give you a list of things to do and not due. I have ran man for 5 years now and have never ever even looked at the belt. I have put it as deep as the bottom of the seat. My little 300 has been retired now though. Now since i have the jeep my quad is pretty much a plow and a yard vehicle. If you have other questions just let me know.

Re: Kodiak 4X4 vs Sportsman 400?

That's funny, i was in your same shoes about two months ago. I test drove both bikes and found likes and dislikes on both. Most of the likes went to the polaris. The price was the same. The only real likes I found with the Yamaha was the off the line acceleration and easier handling. Polaris had superior brakes,CLEARANCE, locking 4-wheel drive, composit racks (major+), 5.25gal. tank, did I mention CLEARANCE. The only downfall is the Sportsman 400 does not come with engine braking. ($300 option), Needles to say, I bought the Polaris w/engine braking installed and I am tickled pink. There have been several times when I've climbed rock hills, parked at the top, then climbed back down to help my buddies with Yamahas and Kawasakis get up.
