looking at used atv?

Looking for alittle advice...

I'm currently looking for a used 4wd utility '97 or newer ATV
(manual or automatic, doesn't matter). I have rode them in the past,
but this will be my 1st one to own. What sort of things should I be
looking for to insure it is in good working order? Also, what would be
a good average for miles/year? What sort of maintenance can I
expect to do? For instance, how long do brakes usually last, etc.?
I assume it will need an oil, differential, spark plug, and air filter change.
Anything else? Any good web sites with this sort of info? How long do
engines usually last before needing a major overhaul?

I have found what looks like a good deal on a '97 Honda Foreman 400
with 680 miles, new brakes, new tires. It seems to be running good
(CV boots look fine). I just don't want to overlook something obvious.

Thanks in advance,
Stephen

Re: looking at used atv?

i wouldnt think that 680 miles is high for a '97 model fourwheeler...that would equate to roughly 325 miles a year which is reasonable. look at the outside appearance, if the plastic looks abused, it probably is. take it for a test spin, if she rides and feels good and most importantly you like it...i would go for it. most newer model quads like that one wont have many problems, if any major at all. take it for a good spin (at least 15 or 20 minutes) and look at the engine closely especialy where the header goes into the head and around the oil plug for leaks. if she runs good and looks clean after a good spin, and you like it....take it home.

cdk hit it about right...I am not much on the 4x4 style quads...but that dont seem too bad...if the price is right and it runs solid...take it...
