1986 Big Red 250es Carburetor Problems

Hi, new to the forum hoping someone can help. I put a new carburetor kit in and cleaned it thoroughly, idle is very high with needle valve open 2 1/2 turns open, to all the way closed. I have not tightened the needle valve down too much to try to close it all the way because it is hard to get too and don't want to strip screw, but i'm fairly certain it is closed. The needle valve that came with the new kit was not the same as the old one so I just went with the old one but used the new o-ring gasket on the old needle valve. Wondering if this may be the problem with the bike running even with valve closed.

Float seemed to be operating ok when I put carb back together. I have slack in the throttle cable and backed the throttle screw down as far as it can go. Put a new new plastic tank on after the cleaning and new fuel.

Any ideas on why it's idiling so high?

I live in Louisiana, how much should the needle valve be open? I think the manual says 2 1/2 turns....does that sound coreect?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

OK I got it figured out. When I pulled the carb again I noticed the butterfly valve was not closed all the way. I pulled the cap off of the throttle cable assembly on the carb and manually operated the gas until I saw it was closing correctly. Reinstalled the carb and adjusted the throttle screw and it now purs like a kitten. Pilot screw is set at 2 1/2 turns out from closed as the manual says. I'm jacked and ready to hunt!!!
