Smile Where should we start?

Hi there,

I'm interested in getting into ATVs. Been an avid off-roader for 20 years, running Jeeps and Toyotas, but never ATVs.

I'm shopping for a used 2-wheel drive ATV, I guess a "sport" ATV, nothing outrageous. We won't be racing or out to be the fastest. It will be a family starter, ridden by both my wife and I, and toting our 3 1/2 year old around. We live in Southern California, so we will be riding in sand in the deserts, and on dirt trails in the mountains. Probably no mud at all.

Can anyone give us any pointers as to what to stay away from (brands, models, etc.)? Is there anything we should look for (electric start, reverse, etc.)? What size would be appropriate?

I'm partial to Honda, as I love my Honda motorcycle, but I realize there are a lot more options in the ATV world.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

The Honda 400EX is a good potential, defiantly the 2005+ models since it has reverse and newer plastic designs.
If your not sure, the 400EX has a 397cc five speed, air cooled engine with a hand clutch. Its a great and proven machine.

Thanks for your reply. It seems that quite a few people are pointing me towards the 400EX, which means it must have a great reputaion. How important is reverse in a quad? I'm not too worried about the plastics, but I might have found a deal for an older 400EX, but without the reverse I think.

It really depends on your riding conditions, if you ride trails or mud reverse is a huge advantage over an quad without reverse.
