2003 yamaha banshee clutch

I've been helping my buddy do a rebuild on his banshee since he busted a skirt off a piston. Let me first say that I am not a motorcycle mechanic. I do know quite a bit about engines in general and can generally understand a repair manual quite well. The problem arises when I try to put the clutch back together. The manual says"insert a cushion ring, a friction plate, a steel plate, a cushion ring, etc. ending with a friction plate. The problem is doing it that way I can only get 3 or 4 of the friction plates in before I run out of room. What's more if I try to put the cushion rings in the friction plates before I install them it's to tight and the cushion ring ends up in front of the friction plate. The manual makes it sound incredibly simple and I'm sure it is to someone who has done it before but I am at a loss. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thank you.
