recon 250 es

i have a 2001 Honda Recon 250 ES and when i start riding ill be in 2nd or 3rd gear and the light for 1st gear will flash and it will not shift. i have 2 stop shut the quad off and shift it down 2 neutral while it is off. anybody have any idea wats wrong??

there is a sensor located just in front of the shift stem that probably needs replaced. It is about $30 and it is reasonably simple to do. The sensor actually determines the amount of "throw" the unit requires to properly shift through the gears. The computer thinks you are moving to a higher gear when in actuality, the mechanical movement is just short.
