Suitable ATV for Colorado mountain passes?

What do you think? Will a 250 -350cc range 2WD ATV be enough to reliably make it over Colorado pass trails (like Imogene, Black Bear) carrying a novice ATV rider (but experiencd "Jeep" driver) & equipment of about 300 lbs total?

If it would be suitable for "good weather" travel in such terrain, how about if there were a few inches of snow?

I just don't want to spend the extra for 4WD if I can help it, and would like to go with as small a machine as I can and still get the job done.

Thanks for your input.
