going from a 250ex and 250r might be a big jump...but yes it can be used as a great trail bike for XC (cross country) just has to be set-up for that

I have gone riding with 250r's many times, and they flat out haul. They're the king on any terrain. If it is good enough for the top pros like Ballance to use on wooded trails, then I think it would be an awesome choice. The 250r is my dream quad, anyone would be lucky to find one.
