problem with polaris 500

I just bought a used 1998 polaris sportsman 500 4x4 with about 800 miles on it. when i start it, it sounds like something in the left side, the black plastic round container, is hitting the plastic as it rotates. i guess the automatic transmission is inside that container. after i drive it for awhile the noise quits, but if my leg hits the plastic, i can hear it scraping the plastic in there as its rotating. is this a known problem with the polaris 4 wheelers?

Sounds like the belt guard is loose. Check all the 10mm screws holding the two pieces together. Also check to see how tight it is against the motor. It could be broken on the back side.
