Make sure the cluster is grounded well, especially if it's on a 'glass tub.
The cluster does have it's own lamp fuse and is grounded via your headlight switch.
Your temp gauge problem is unrelated.
Your replacment gauge should have a 12v lead and a sender wire which sounds like it could be the culprit if your old temp gague was working.
