How much can I grind??

I know its been asked many times but I just want to make sure..I just bought used chrome 8 hole 15x8 American Racing(It looks like the wagon wheels but chrome) wheels to go on my 10 bolt..I installed it and it I cant even turn it.Its got 4" backspacing..Is this too much backspacing?Or can I safely grind the caliper/backing plates??Ive never done this before..BTW whats the best tool to use..I have a low duty air grinder is this enough or is it much easier(or woth it) to get one of those heavy duty angle grinders??

I read in the archives to use paint to figure out where to grind but Im just afraid I might take off to much and break something..lol

OT..The 6" lift is in but I still need two rear shocks..The casualty list includes 2 flex brake hoses,4 feet of brake lines,1 rear spring pack,1 brake cylinder,1 gas line..Anybody know how to figure out the legth of shock I need?
