Is this a power steering box? If so, it could be a bad spring in the box. There's a valve that uses force applied to the steering wheel to control the hydraulic assist. A spring counteracts the valve. If the spring gets weak, I think, it can make the steering one-finger easy. I think it works that way - it's been a long time since I took one apart.

Anyway, it could be a problem in the steering box, which is something to take very seriously.
