carb tuning - bending float?

i have a rochester on my 258 and it seems to want to load up at low rpms, also going down hills it has a slight backfire. i have the mixture screws set about as lean as possible to still idle ok, so i was told the float needs to be adjusted. how do i know when i have it where it needs to be, any kinds of tests to do? i am not carb literate, so tak eit easy on me.....thanks all

shawn

The cup isn't half full or half empty, it's just twice the size it needs to be!!!
