lengthening the steering shaft

From what I've heard so far, the way to lengthen the steering shaft is to remove some pins, slide the shaft to the right length, then put the pins back in. Not only is this a very crude understanding of how it works, but it also might be wrong for all I know. Since I may be needing to do this soon, I was wondering if someone could either tell me pretty precisely where the pins are or post a pic. I would appreciate it. Thanks. (Oh, and if anybody has some pics of a lowered radiator, I wouldn't mind seeing those either.)
