Well, think about it this way...assuming there's no brake lines or anything in the way, what sort of damage will happen to the axle should it hit the frame rail? Not too much. But you're right, they keep the axle away from the frame rail. Why? Because you want to keep the tires from hitting the body/frame/etc. That's where you'll get damage. If you're landing hard, putting a ton of weight on rapidly spinning wheels, and they suddenly strike the stationary (relative to them) body of the jeep, think about what happens... The bumpstops are there to prevent that contact from occuring. So the extra travel isn't a result of larger tires...but larger tires exacerbate problems associated with wheel travel and tire/body contact. Got that?
