I want to build my own rocker protectors and would like to know if I use 3/16"(maybe 4"x4") angle iron bolted to the rockers if they would be strong enough without being mounted to the frame. I would also like to weld a bar on the rockers to keep the jeep off the rocks and trees. Any info or pics would be great. Thanks.
I used 1/4" 4x4 angle iron bolted to the rocker panel, the Jeep can be jacked up by them. It is not necessary to bolt them to the frame. If you search back thru the past few months there are some pics of them on a couple threads.
I have used the 3/16" angle iron and it works pretty good but the 1/4" holds up better to the hard blows. We don't attach them to the frame, just to the body tub. We have put some really hard hits on these things and so far have taken everything put at them.
On the last one that I put together we used 3/16" tread plate first then put the 3/16" angle iron on to act as a slider for the underneath of the tub. I haven't gotten to test it out yet but I think they will be almost indestructible.
We made a set for a friend of mine using 1/4"x4" on the bottom and 3/8"x3" on the side. we welded them together and bolted them on with several bolt to the side of the body to help distribute any forces.
