For ditch banging the Polaris XC's are a great pick. Polaris has the best handling front suspension out there in my opinion. That suspension is usually voted the best by the snow magazines also. I ride a Polaris 700 RMK and a 600 RMK as powder sleds and have had Polaris sleds for about ten years. They have never let me down with any major mechanical problems. If you get one with the high-torque twin you're probably looking at $3-4K for a '97 or '98, more for newer.
