Have just recently aquired a 89 silverado 4x4.Can anyone tell me proper shifting practices for in and out of four wheel drive? The seller showed me it worked but I was outside the truck. There are no lockouts(manual).I believe he put gearshift in nuetral and then just slammed the 4x4 shifter into 4h.Any info would be appreciated for I dont want any more damage to her(it is an old truck)and I want to bring her back to life. Thanks for your time.
I'm guessing this is K1500? If so, if you want 4HI simply shift at pretty much anyspeed into it. But with low, you must come to a complete stop and **** your transmission into Neutral or Park. Then shift into 4LO.
Just don't use it on dry paved areas. Loose and slipery surfaces only, but I'm sure you know that.
I echo Cody's explanation. When shifting into 4HI, I stay under 40mph until (even after) engagement.
