Your mission should you choose to accept it...

Is to explain to me in words of no more then one sylable how an automatic locker functions.

I've been trying to wrap my head around this for ages. Literally... ages. I've almost got it, but there's a question that no one seems to be able to answer.

These pictures helped me a bunch... so
The parts.. very simple.. right?

assembled out of the carrier. looks simple right?

the central guts.

Now.. when the locker sits in the carrier, in ones driveway, the 4 springs and pins inside it push the inner disks out, locking them in the teeth of the outer rings. The inner rings them bind on the center pin, and the carrier is locked.

The rings picture in the first picture hold the two "side" disks against the outside of the carrier so they don't move in or float around.. but allow the inner disks to slide in and out.

NOW.. someone PLEASE explain what forces/device force the center disks together to unlock the differential.

Am I missing something? or is this like voodoo?
