I get your question I think. I have a NP435 in my jeep and one in my 90 dodge 1ton. It is not like most 4spds because the low gear is not synchro. So usually unless you need a really low gear, you start in second. The suburban I had with a Sm465 had low,1st,2nd,3rd on the shifter handle. Its even hard to shift out of low sometimes so it really is more like a 3spd. Another gear on the highway would be nice, but around town and on the trail they are great.
