Are dust shields really needed?

I begun tearing into my new axles for my swap today, and I have a question on the front axle. The dust shield that goes behind the front disk brakes is squashed. I have found them quite anoying on my presant axle because I always bash them up and the rub on the roter. Are they really needed to keep mud and junk off the brakes, or are they just a ploy by the 'Axis of Evil' to get me to straighten them out?
