polaris 50 scrambler

I am new here but have seen some knwledgable advice ,And i need some advice . My son has a 2001 polaris 50 scrambler , was running ok ,but they decided to play in the mud one day .Now it will not run , have installed new plug , removed carb and cleaned all passages is getting fuel and fire . I do not know a lot about 2 strokes ,hold throttle wide open with breather off will blow smoke out carb do not know if this is normal. I am a mechanic for autos not small engines. Any suggestions or info would help ,Before i spend 300 bucks on new carb. thanks
