Hi Country ATV Trails & ATP info
For those of you who viewed and/or responded to our Polaris ATP 500 H.O. posting...we went ahead and purchased the machine. We've only rode it about 100 miles (all in the Colo Rockies above 10,000 feet) but the initial impression is that we made a great purchase. We've used it to pull some trees, drag them out of our Aspen grove...used the winch enough to know it works, and traveled (riding double) up to the snow fields above 12 mile lake..over Sheep Mtn (actually Breakneck and Browns passes) to Horseshoe campground on 4 mile Road, just below Mt. Sherman. Portions of our ride were in the rain, the Polaris has great agility on the slippery rocky terrain...it impressed us. Down by the Beaver Ponds on 689A it even got the chance to show us it's stuff in some faily deep ponds (a foot or so deep) along the trail. We climbed over several rock fields, both on 176 and 689, and we never once noticed or heard rocks clanking off the undercarriage. And it has enough power, even with both of us aboard, to react with a snap any time we pushed the throttle going up a steep grade.
So far, we're impressed...and satisified with our purchase. The only bug at this point it setting the idle. It ran great in the shop when we purchased it (don't they all!!!!) but the shop in Woodland Park is just over 8500ft. Our cabin (where the ATP will live is at 10,000 ft). After reading the manuel, and talking to our dealer, we determined that the injector and all the other setting are proper for use between 6,000 and 12,000 feet...so we'll just be fiddl'n with the setting until it idles properly.
If you would like some trail information from the high country below Fairplay, and above Buena Vista...let us know. We'll be riding this area most of the time, with this machine. We're not hot-dogs so if you're after some aggressive (speedwise) riding, this area probably isn't for you. But, if you want to see some spectacular views, and ride with a feeling that you are on top of the world...don't be a stranger.
Also, we'd like to learn a bit more about the Stealth exhaust systems. If you have any experience with them, or know anything about them, drop us a note.
Thanks...Good Riding
