I wanna put a new air intake into my stock 1999 2.7 Tacoma 4x4 ext. cab to get a little better power and fuel economy. I've narrowed it down to either the K&N Gen II FIPK or the AEM Brute Force Intake kit. I was wondering if anyone had either of these or opinions about which is better. Also if I put one on is the "check engine" light gonna pop on.
Yea I installed the aem on mine and it seems to be doing fine. No check engine light. Kinda sounds like a supercharger cause of the whistling. But i've been reading about the deck plate mod and from what everyone is saying, I could've saved a little $$. Have you thaught about a header? The pacesetter I installed with jba exhaust was quite simple and it really helped to compliment the intake.
Now from what Ive been looking up it sounds like the air filters arent all that great. Theyre all the same thing and dont increase performance that much. Would I be better off getting a new muffler and pipes if Im looking for a better sound and performance. Or is there something else anyone recomends.
What about the Outlaw intake? It claims to increase fuel economy and horsepower throughout all RPM ranges. It has its own air box so mud, dirt, water won't mess up te engine. Anybody have one or any information on how they perform?

HEre is the best adivce you will get for what you are looking at doing. DONT use those intakes. THey may work but I can tell you how to save $$$$ going a different route. Look up the deckplate mod for your air intake and then just get a new muffler and 2 1/4 piping cat back. This all should cost $250-300 for all of it. Best bang for your buck. Now spend all the money I just saved you on something else.
i went with a k&N intake sysytem and it does work also an airaid "throtle body sapcer" , jba headers, gibson exhaust half-cab exhaust system. all of these things work, now im getting 30mpg on the highway and my 98 4x4 tacoma trd 3.4l sounds and runs great. i dyno tested my truck and im getting 220hp at the engine and 185hp at the rear wheel and it has no blower yet! IM VERY SATISFIED..TOTAL AMOUNT FOR ALL THIS WAS $1200 WHICH in the long run is worth it with the gas prices
Save yourself some time effort , grief & money ..... drop in a K&N replacement air filter and take out the snorkel under the fender . The K &N alone meant the difference of one gear range to me .......or more importantly .......not having to downshift .
