Default Gearing

I have a 2001 Tacoma, V6 5 speed. I just lifted the truck and put 35's on it and Im now ready to re-gear. It came stock with 4.10 and 265/70 R16, so I was thinking of going with 4.88 gears. I will be using it for a DD on the highway as well as off-road. Will 4.88 kill my 75mph driving on the highway? Should I be thinking about going with 4.56 gears? Still up in the air on doing a ARB front locker at this time. Dont think I will ever need it but boy would that be sweet--lol. Well thanks for any help you might be able to give, I would sure hate to not like what i pick and have to change.

do you have an auto or 5 speed? I am guessing you have the trd tacoma so you have a rear locker. If you think you will never use the front not worth all that money plus that is when you start to break things up front... 35's locked on a turn. I have 35's on a 5 speed with 7inchs of lift and 4.88's. I do have the charger and urd fuel mods. I am aat abnout 3100 at 75.. I get about 17-18MPG so I like it. If you have the auto for sure get some 4.88's// if you have the 5 speed and DO NOT do much offroading and when you do NOT hard offroading then maybe the 4.56's will be better for the freeway. But It all depends on you.

Default 4.56 Vs 4.88

Thank you red for your time, It is a TRD 5 speed. I do have plans to charge it but not sure when that will happen. The 3100 at 75mph is the info I was looking for. Is that in 5th or 4th? I do lots of hunting and drive in the Colorado mountains over passes and long hills and want to keep up with traffic. Just thinking here but if it's 3100 at 75 in 5th then the 4.56 will be the way to go, but if its 3100 at 75 in 4th then 4.88 would work. I tend to not use my 5th gear in the hills and was running some place in the 2500 to 2800 at 75 stock in 4th. But that is off of memory only--lol. Any way thanks for taking the time to help, as far as what type of 4x4ing i will be using it for, well nothing more than a stock truck im sure, but I never know until I get there--lol

that is in 5th gear.. well here is your problem... in 4th gear going in the mountains you might want the 4.88's to keep up the rpms so you don't have to go down into 3rd.. but the 4.56's may work just fine in 4th.. if you do get the 4.56's you might have to use 4th gear on the freeway when going up hill.. with 4.88's you don't. So it is all fun and games. You just have to decide what you want more. Good luck and enjoy.
