Cable Concern

Does anyone know if Tacoma speedometer cables slides out of thier sheathes? I know Hondas and some Toyota cars will slide right out if you take the fitting loose from the tranny, and yank on the end of the cable with a pair of pliers. I need to grease mine and don't want to damage it trying. I figure someone else has probably tried it and has suffered that hardship...if there is one.

I don't think that they do. Well, at least with any success. I've heard once they start making 'the' noise, replacement is the only answer. Bray

Has anyone had issues of getting water inside their speedo cables? Mine makes quite a bit of noise, but only when it's around 25degrees or below, and it starts making the noise generally at about 35mph and up, regardless of what gear it's in.

I'm pretty sure it's ice in the cable. If I let it warm up about 15 minues, then let it sit for about 15 minutes with the engine off before I go anywhere, it doesn't do it.
But, who wants to wait 30 minutes to go anywhere???
What's the easiest way to get some lube in there, and should I use lithium grease, graphite, or what?

Sorry, I'm not trying to hijack your thread, it's kind of the same issue, lol

I tried graphite. It was suggested in a previous thread, but I couldn't get anything in the cable end. I used a spray white lube, and it worked for about a month. I've got some great heavy duty chain lube, but don't have a nozzle to get in the cable end. I figure next time I get in there I'm gonna have to engineer something.

I have used a motorcycle cable lube tool to lube cables without having to remove them from the housing. For the lubricant use something that will leave the right residue (teflon or silicon) like TRI-FLO aresol.
These lube tools are available at motorcycle shops ($20) and look like this:

this beats the heck out of removing the entire cable and re-inserting it into the housing!

I bought one of those lube tools. Didn't work. No let down, I'm sure I can use it on my 4wheeler or rail buggy. The housing is just so friggin huge on the 'yota. The squeek is starting to die down with the weather so I've got some time to figure something out. I'll post back when I do, or when I don't, either one.
