Default ABS dash light

My ABS light has been coming on at random times throughout the last three or four weeks. Sometimes it stays on when I start the truck, and sometimes it comes on after a few minutes of driving. Haven't noticed a pattern.

Anyway, what could this be? What kind of problems could there be in the antilock system? Is it most likely electrical?

FYI, I've got a '99 PreRunner V6 TRD with about 85k miles on it.

Steve, have you done or have you had any work done on your truck lately?

Nope, haven't done anything to it... Need to change the oil though.

I changed the front brake pads about two and a half years ago. Since then, haven't touched the brakes. Haven't done any mods lately (past year). Heck, I haven't even washed it lately (gonna try and do that this weekend).

I had a similar problem on a car a few years ago. It turned out to be a wheel speed sensor.

That is funny! I haven't washed mine in quiet a while either.
Monkey's thoughts are right on track with one of the first things you should look for tracking down your problem. Bray

Hmm... ok, I guess I'll start there.

Is this something that I would find on the caliper? How much does a replacement run? How can I test it without replacing it?

Thanks for the help.

Bray - Got the truck washed this weekend... she still cleans up nice!!

The speed sensor is part of the hub, it looks like a cog that doesn't do anything. there is a sensor that measures how fast the teeth of the wheel goes around. make sure all the teeth are there, other cannot say how to check each sensor, since the FSM isn't working anymore. But there is one for each wheel

I was reading thru some of the post in thru 4x4wire.com in regards to ABS system (it seems its a common problem with 99 tacos), I’ve been trying to figure out my on-going problem with my truck; its been about 2 yrs now and still could not determine as to why my ABS light would come on. The ABS light would intermittently come on and off with no reason. Before the ABS light would turn on, I would hear a churning or grinding noise coming from –behind the brake fluid reservoir (I apologize I don’t know the name of it); its either the vacuum supplied diaphragm? Then the light would turn on. My truck has been going thru 3 rotors within a two year time frame (they were cheap after market brakes and rotors), now I have replaced them with Toyota brakes and rotors. I have not however, changed my power steering fluid yet. It all started about 2 yrs ago when I did a panic stop to avoid hitting a vehicle, I stepped on the brake fairly hard and also in the process hit a pothole which then ABS light came on; but would occasionally turn off. I was hoping you could shed some light or point me to a direction to get my problem resolved, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

Ps. I did however, taken it to a Chevy dealership for diagnosis and came up with speed sensor $155 and a Deceleration sensor $950---I do not trust dealerships that much at all; now I have read thru some posts and it seem it might be something with the power steering pump or the vacuum supplied diaphragm.
I apologize for the long post.

I think if the sensors are cleaned, at least it would rule this common problem out. Then we could go from there. Bray
