Default Automatic hubs

I keep seeing this on lift kits that says you cant go higher than 2in. if you have automaic hubs.
Is this true? What causes the problem? Can you swap in manul hubs? Also Ive heard there is an ADD hub is that the same as an automatic hub? If its diferent how do you know witch one you have?
P.S. Sorry if this is too many questions at once.

Going over 2.5" with ADD will cause the cv joints to be put at too much of an angle. One way to tell is do have shift on the fly 4wd? Another is to see if your cv's spin while the truck is moving. If you have ADD forget the manual hubs unless you want to spend big bucks.

If I dont have ADD then what dose it take to switch to manual? Is it as simple as getting a set of warns and bolting them on? And if its just shift on the fly can i go higher than 2in.

First lets try and figure out what you have. What year is your truck? You can't go above 2.5" with ADD or Shift on the fly. With some auto hub trucks it's easy to just swap out to manual hubs.

Its a 96 and I checked the half shafts do turn when the truck is moving. So how much do you know about switching from add to manual?
If I can get a list of all the parts I need I can start looking in the junk yards and on ebay.
If I can do it for under a 1000 I think it s worth it.

I don't think you have ADD being it's a 96.Most likely you have auto hubs which I'm not sure w/o seeing them but should be very easy to swap out to manual.

I found some stuff on the web that said ADD has been arond since 1990, also if I had automatic hubs why would the half shaft turn with the wheels? I've also heard that automatic hubs are realy hard to unlock and I've never had any trouble getting it out of 4x4. but I cant find anything that will tell me for sure what it is.

What do your hubs look like? Can you post a pic? Anything pre-2001 from what I understand is very easy to add manual hubs to.

I second the need for a pic. But I doubt he has Auto hubs, which means he will need an aftermarket kit to do the conversion ($800-$1000).

Once he posts a pic of his front hub area, we will know what he has.

BTW, my 99 4Runner would require the big $$ kit as the Tacos as I do NOT have auto hubs.
