towing

Thinking about buying a Taco to tow my 3 quads up to camp. The quads weigh about 1800 pounds and the trailer is a dual axle aluminum at 500 pounds. I'll also put another 500 pounds in the box. The tow is 155 miles one way with a few pretty good hills. Do you guys think a 3.4 would do the job. One last question, auto or manual shift. Any thoughts on this would be helpful. Thanks

You should have no problem towing less than 3K lbs with the 3.4. As for the tranny, either will work fine, but you should add an aux. tranny cooler if you buy the auto. I tow often with my 3.4 (4Runner Auto)(anywhere from 1K-5K lbs) and occasionally with my 22RE (93 pickup 5 spd)(anywhere from 1K to 3K lbs) and see some hills when I tow. Obviously, the 3.4 tows much better than the 22RE...

do what he says above with either tranny. unless you can tow extremely well with a manual youl burn more clutches than its worth, just get the automatic, but again its up to you and after a few clutches, youll be able to tow fine. the engine is adequate, but ill always swing for the chevy 5.7 engine, but toyotas engine is still enough, but do consider replacing at least your front brake rotors with cross drilled or slotted of both rotors, or if you can afford larger pads and the kit get it. the only concern is stopping power because youre toyota is light wieght, ive towed in an astrovan before its got the engine but not the wieght so i almost burned up the brakes trying to get the thing to stop in an acceptable distance, just a point to consider though
