Ok, here's another sort of NEWB question. If I go with the 2.7L engine and a 5spd tranny (still toying with the idea of an Auto though) and I want to run 30-31" tires, what gears will I need? Stock won't cut it at all? Regearing is expensive I hear, and I'm not sure I'm capable of doing that myself...not sure what's invovled but I understand it's a bit tricky. let me know
The stock tires are 30-31's so you will be fine with stock gearing, if you can find a trd they have 4.10 rear end so even better for you, re gearing a rearend is not difficult, but you need to know what you are doing. you need to set the backlash correctly by spacing it out right, and if you dont' have the proper tools you will not get it right. you prolly don't want to spend $150 on a tool you will use once, if you take the axle off and on yourself, you can get it done real reasonable.
Not all Tacomas have 31" tires from the factory. Some come with 28" tires. I am not sure if there are gearing differences between the two though.
With that said, even if your truck had OE 28" tires, you should be able to run 31" without re-gearing. I have done it for years with my '93 22RE which does not have any where near as much power as the 2.7.
If you decide to go any bigger than 31", then it would be time for new gears (with the 2.7).
I found some info that helps too.....gear codes, I just need to check the sticker in the door jamb to make sure the truck doesn't have the 3:58's that some of the 2.7L engines came with early on. 3:91's or 4:10's are my other options and either should be fine as I understand it.
I have a 95.5 2.7L and it has a factory 4.10. Google tacoma gear codes and there are a few websites out there to help you figure out what you got without having to get under it and count teeth.
ya I found some gear codes at TTORA.com, I don't have the truck yet...this is all in prep for buying one. So I needed a way to tell what I was getting easily and the G-codes will help me out alot. Thanks guys
I got an 02 2.7L 5 Speed, and got 4.30's. Most of the newer 5 speed 4 bangers come with 4.30's, but ya, TTORA has a long long long thread about re gearing right now, scoope that out.
