Default Gears for Taco TRD Locking Diff

Hello All, this is a post I put on the SUV/Truck board but maybe you guys are the ones for the job... Any help is appreciated!

I'm looking for some 5.29 gears for a TRD Locking Differential that I am going to swap in my 85 runner. after some research here's what I came up with.

Toyota told me that the V6 (79-95) gears are the same as the TRD gears. hence you can swap (with some mods) a trd 3rd member into a 1st or 2nd gen runner or truck, yada yada. but not a non-TRD because they are 8.4" so the normal V6 gears would work.

After a search on this forum (I can't find it again) some have stated that you need a different pinion flange, also that precision made a gear that would eliminate this problem.

I called precision and he seemed to want to sell me the 8.4" gear. he said they were not interchangeable with the V6 gears. as I look at a print out of their web info it appears that the "gear" for the 8.4" diff is still 8" in dia. (the same as the tundra/non-trd diff) at least that's on their spec sheet. but so is the V6 gear.

What have others found that works for this? What exactly will I need and where is a good place with good prices to get it?

Also a gear shop told me they can generally do the swap with out extra shims. that I can believe, but another gear distributor told me that I would for sure need the whole install kit, bearings and all regardless of cond. (mine are in good cond.) because "no matter how good the tech. the bearings almost always get ruined when you press them off!"

I'm not sure what to believe here...

I'd suggest you call Randy's ring & pinion, genuine gear or yukon for gears and advance adapters for the hook-up of the flange. Many hardcore offroaders have ditched the TRD e-locker for ARB air lockers front and rear! I hope this helps. Bray
