What do you plan to do with it? Do you plan to go off-road alot? Do you plan to go mudding? Rock-crawling? Or just cruise down some dirt roads now & then. Will this be a daily driver? Or will it be parked until it's 'playtime'? Where do you live? Are the winters snowy? 2WD can be a little tricky when you're driving in ice and snow. (And I know someone is thinking it, so I'll say it: 4WD will help you GO when it's slick, but it won't make you STOP any faster ).

Also, who's goiung to be paying the insurance? 4WD will be higher, and gas mileage will be lower. Also, more maintenance on a 4X4. You may want to talk to your insurance guy first about the pro's and con's of 2WD vs. 4WD, if money is an issue.

In the end, it's YOUR truck. If you don't get what you want, you might wind up regretting your choice. BUT, do a little research, don't just buy a 4X4 for the mall.

My 2 cents

I'd take that saved money and go take some English courses at your local college. Isn't it actually harder to type like that than to type in real English, it almost seems like you would have to try to abbreviate like that. Anyways if you're 23 what do you care what your dad says, you still live at home?
or should i say

neways f ur 23 wut do u care wut ur d say, u stil live at hom?

I agree with Joe Trinkley. English classes would be the way to go. If you have enough money after that I'd go with the 4X4.

I agree with the english classes, netspeak is one of my pet-peeves. Annoys the hell out of me. Almost as much as people who own big 4x4s or SUVs and don't use them for what 4x4 is ment for.

However, if you do plan on doing a little wheeling but nothing extreme, you may want to check out the Tacoma Pre-runner, its a 4x2 but on the 4x4 frame (pretty much). Gives you a little extra clearance and room better off-road tires.

A lot of good advice from these guys. I live here in the midwest and you dont see a lot of 4x2 out and about. I know that in the southwest you can get buy with because of the wild weather they get. 4 wheel trucks are great and worth the expense you pay for them the first time you HAVE to use for wheel drive. The extra money you pay for 4x4 will be well spent. Like monkey said, "what are you planning on doing with it?" I own two Toyotas one is a 91 4x4 with the 4 banger. Great MPG but way under powered for the 31's before the engine mods. I also own a 98 limited 5 spd manual with V6 and 4 wheel drive. I love them both and buying a Toyota will be one of the best vehicle investments you will ever have.
I read an article in one of the 4wheel magazines and they are calling the next 5 years the "golden age for Tacomas" You can pick one up at a great price out west.
Good luck man.

Well like everyone has said already.... english may be the first step. I almost got a headache trying to read your posts. But you are 23 and you listen to your old man when it comes time to you buying a truck? Sure take his advice and use it but you are the one who will own and drive and pay for the truck. Sounds to me you would be more then fine with a prerunner two wheel drive. YOu will still have good clearance, good size tires, and the rear locker. RED
