Default Squealling noise

Hi,
I have a used '99 Tacoma prerunner. There is a pretty loud squealing noise coming from the rear passenger side. It seems to only happen when I'm going about 60 mph. Every once in awhile it happens about 30-40 mph. This noise is getting worse, I've taken it to the mechanic and he said he can't find or hear a noise. It kind of sounds like a really really loud cricket. I'm not very confident in this guy but he's the mechanic the dealer where I bought the truck, uses. I know this description isn't the best but it's kind of hard to describe. Anyone have any similar problems? I've done a little research online and from other people's posts, it seems maybe the rear u-joint? Any other possibilities?
Any suggestions or tips would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Jon

I had the same problem. There is a hidden alimite in the U-joint. The joint closest to the tranny...u will need a needle fitting for you grease gun.

crazyhorse3030 has a legit claim. Are you running with both windows down or is this sound coming from the interior? The A/C fan can make this 'cricket noise' but it's on the passenger-side behind the glove box area. Bray

Hi,
Thanks for your response. I am hearing the noise with the windows down and up. The noise seems to be more towards the rear, or right behind the passenger seat, but definately underneath. I think the post before, about the "alimite"? sounds more like it might be the problem. Thanks

This was done on my '01 4x4 Tacoma Double cab but the rear driveline should be the same for a pre runner.

I had a similar noise in my driveline when it was cold, below 30 F. It almost drove me crazy!! I greased the U-joints and even removed the carrier bearing (between the transfer case and rear diff)that supports the rear drive shaft to check if it needed replacing. Finally I unbolted the drive shaft from the rear differential flange as well as the next forward flange (at the carrier bearing) While this was out I put a light coating of grease on each flange face, re-installed the drive shaft and haven't heard a squeak since. Just my experience with a similar sounding problem. It only took about 20min to grease the flanges.

I forgot to mention that I also greased the slip-yoke. But I still had a squeaking squalling noise until I greased the flange face. It never can have too much grease! That is until it slings all over the place!!
