bad gas mileage?

i have a toyota tacoma 2.7l prerunner. and i drive it easy. turn the over drive on when needed. and im barely getting 17mpg. that seems a little weak to me. i mean its a 4cylinder, not 4 wheel drive. whats the problem?

Why do you turn your overdrive off? Is most of your driving in town? short trips?

You should get better mileage on the highway, but if you mostly drive short trips and don't allow the engine to fully warm up, then the mileage will be lower.

That's about what i get in my 2.7. ~17-18 on a good day. I think it got better before i got 31's on it. We'll see what happens when i go to 33's and regear

most of my driving is in city but there arent a lot of traffic lights.

I get about 20 intown and about 22/23 on highway. It makes a big diffence in how I drive though. The old 4banger really sucks it down when you drive like a bat out of hell.
I also have the 2.7 but its a 5spd, that may be some of diffence but I just hit 18k.
How many miles are on yours? If its getting up there, maybe change air filter, plugs, cables etc. If anything just make sure truck is properly maintained, including tire pressure and the works.
It could be alot of things though, perhaps you got a bad tank of gas or something.

That's a pretty broad question. How many miles are on the truck? Any changes or mods done to your truck over the time you experienced the drop in MPG? One cause for loss of mileage on our trucks that have 75,000+ miles on them is the bank 1 sensor 1(pre-cat) o2 sensor(even w/o a CEL). Though wildly trying fixes could get expensive.
