| | | Grease question Guys,
Thanks for all your help so far. This forum has been a a lot of help. My next question is about grease. I read that Toyota uses 2 types of grease for the driveshaft. both are NLGI #2, but one is Moly Disulfide Lithium and the other is just lithium based. Is there one grease that will do all my joints? Or do I need 2 types?
What brand are you guys using?
Thanks.

| | Re: Grease question Maybe I am just a fool, but I use MDL for everything, I use Valvoline Synth, b/c it is easy to get. Some around here are sold on Amsoil and use that. I think the most important thing is to lube it often 3000 miles or so (every oil change), and after a good day of mudding. At 65K I have had no problems.

| | | Re: Grease question I only use 1 grease for everything, just a good high quality synthetic will do. I have one question regarding greasing though. I grease regularly because my um, wheeling habit, makes it necessary. Last time i discovered that I can't get grease to come out of all 4 "fingers" on the rear u-joint. it only comes out of 1, and its starting to sound a little dry. I took the fitting off and poked around inside to see if there was anything gooey plugging it up, but couldn't locate anything. Is there any way to clear the blocked ports, or am i going to need to replace it? i know its cheap, just a pain to take off the driveshaft. |

| | Re: Grease question My old Toyota(94) did this quite regularly. I just pumped "extra" to make sure it attempeted to penetrate. After 3 years I got paranoid and decided to replace the U-joints. Well, 8 stitches later I got the rear joint off. I figured since it didn't have grease oozing out it must've been dry. They all were fine. There was not a single roller that was decayed. I was pretty miffed to get stiches over nothing. Long story short-keep it thouroughly lubed and wear eye protection even if using a 1/2" drive ratchet on the U-joint C clamp! If you ever have them feel hot after a short cruise down highway then it really is time to replace and the grease isn't getting in. they will be warm/hot but you can hold your hand on em idefinitely. More than that, pull them asap. Matt |

| | | Re: Grease question Yeah I just about knocked myself out changing my u-joint I split my eyebrow pretty good...anyhow you don't have to pull the whole drive shaft off just remove the bolts on the coller that mounts to the rear diff, slide out the slip yoke and beat the hell out of the u-joint until the bearing caps start to work their way out. I'm sure this is common knowledge though. |

| | Re: Grease question Either one works fine. Synth is good too. Just grease them often, can't hurt. If I do any serious water crossings, I pump some grease as soon as I get home or before driving my truck again and I check the diff lube just be sure.
