I have a 4 wheelin enthusiest friend that is telling me htat before I even think about lifting it or anything else I need some diffs that lock. He thinks I should get the detoit tru-trac up front and a locker in the rear. Any thoughts on this?
I was thinking of finding a junked/totaled tacoma that had TRD and steel its entire rear end so that I can a have an elecronic locker vs jstu having it always locked.
ANy major disadvantages to have just a solid rear locker?
You prob want to know what type of 4 wheelin I do.
I mainly just hit up the local mountains, which are basically jstu trails, 4WD isn't even needed for most of it. I don't go very often, jsut for fun sometimes with my other buddies. So I am thinking that all that stuff is prob overkill. But I would think that something other then just an open rear end is prob a good idea.
there are a couple rear lockers and all but a verry slim 1 maby are full tim lockers you cant drive on street locked!! locker companys know this so there are not alot of lockers that are permenet i dont even know of any but there are soma if you want that you could just do a lincon locker where you weld your rings togather and yeur locked for ever but that would be stupid you could get the trd one and there are many more look it up or call ORW in san diego look them up on the web and ask them what they have
sounds like you dont even need a locker yet. If you want to lift it to put on bigger tires you can do that w/o a locker. Wheel that truck man if you find yourself getting stuck alot or not makin' it places that you would like to THEN get a locker.
I'm pretty happy with my TRD rear e-locker. I don't do any major "hard core" wheeling but I do like to take weekend trips and go hit some steep rocky and sometimes muddy or snowy trails. I have been able to do most everything in 4-hi or 4-lo but there has been that occasion where I was very happy to have the rear locker.
If I was you, I would start with a rear locker, like you said, if you can find one off a junk yard truck that would be ideal but possibly hard to find. I have heard of others doing this same thing and they were pleasantly surprised at the difference it made.
What year truck do you have? Do you have a solid front axle? If you do not I would not put anything in the ront, run it open. I believe that there is an ARB for the front of the IFS trucks but it is hard on the steering and you are bound to break something.
Finding a totaled TRD my not be hard but it will be expensive.
Wheel in the stock form and see where to go from there. Bigger tires may require lower gears. At that time you could put a locker in. Look into the ARB lockers. They are selectable and will hold up fine for your use. I just put a 14 bolt SF axle with a Detroit in my truck and it is harsh on the street. Good Luck.
Well, I can't add much to Danny & Mike's posts, because I agree with both. With the TRD e-lock, you'll be able to do most anything (much more than you do now). That is why 4 Wheel & Off-Road voted it 4x4 of the year 2 out of 4 years. Eaton I believe makes the same L-diff for our Coma's. And as Mike said, it sounds as if the front should be left open, because it does not seem to be needed at this time. Try the rear first and if you start getting into more serious sh!$, it's probably time for a solid front axle(w/a locker). Bray. P.S. Thanks Dan and Mike for your comments. I agree with Tony, but if you do wanna take wheelin seriously i would get lockers for sure they are so important. IF you do get lockers get a powertrax for the rear they dont make detroits for tacomas. And get a lock right for the front, thats my setup on my truck.
