if your interested in mud tires...
I highly recomend the BFG M/T
It is a good mud tire, and it is really good on the road too. I think it looks pretty beefy with the aggressive side lugs. Also the goodyear MTR is a pretty sweet looking tire. But I don't personally know how they ride on the street. I know they don't last as long due to the softer rubber!
Your stock tires are 265/70/16, and you can go to 265/75/16 without rubbing. Also, they'll be cheaper than the stock size. I'd go with BFG mud-terrains...I got the all-terrain's, but next time I might go with the MTs...
265/70/16 = $165 per tire
285/75/16 = $185 per tire
I have a friend that works at wal-mart but i haven't talked to him in a few years. In case that doesn't work out does anyone know where to get BFG at a cheaper price. Someone please help!
I've heard you can get them for cheaper at places like Sears, but I've also read A LOT of posts about people getting bad/not round/problematic tires from so-called "discount" tire stores. Its almost like they're selling seconds. I may be a cheap-skate about some things but tires are not something I want to go cheap on, in my opinion...just heard too many stories of bad tires where the people tried everything to get rid of vibration problems and it turned out to the an out-of-round tire. Regardless, no matter who you buy from I'm sure you'll even get a BFG every now and then that is defective...my .02
I was in your situation a few weeks back, even have the same truck as you. I wanted an aggressive looking tire but also good mpg and treadwear. It's a series of give and take. A good mud tire will have softer rubber which means it won't last long on the road and mpg will also suffer. A good tire for the road will have a harder rubber which will mean better mpg and treadwear but poorer mud performance. I finally settled on some ATs from bridgestone. Got a 50,000 warranty and they look nice and aggressive. I also went a little narrower than stock so that will help mpg a fraction. I don't get in mud holes so deep mud has never been an issue. However, lately I have had the truck in some pretty muddy trails and she came through without any problems. Let us know what you decide.
It sounds like you'll be on road more than off. That being said, BFG All-Terrains are an outstanding tire with an excellant rep. They will wear longer than the mud terrain tires. You will also have more rubber on the road which translates to better performance such as handling and braking. The all terrains from BFG will also perform well in snow and mud. They look pretty good too. If you have to go for looks then there is no denying the BFG Mud-Terrains. Either way, I recommend BFG's.
