Default MIL Light On-- Need Advise

Howdy all,

Not a new Tacoma owner, but new to the forum on this website (I was actually a regular visiter about four to five years ago but only recently came back around).

Anyhow, to my problem. About two weeks ago the MIL lamp came on shortly after startup leaving my driveway (the truck had been on for roughly 3-4 minutes warming up). I took it to the local dealer and they reset the lamp and said that the code was diagnosed as an "intermittent misfire". Well, this morning the lamp came on again.

Recently (I can't remember exactly when it started) the truck started surging a bit at idle. After the first MIL lamp, I decided to change the plugs (original plugs at 59K miles) and I put in the Autolite single electrode plugs which were recommended by the guy at the Kragen parts counter. After installation, I read on the front of the motor that the 3.4 V6 motor needs dual electrode plugs. The new plugs did not seem to affect the surge at idle-- and since I got another MIL thrown it may or may not have affected that either.

In short, my questions are twofold. First, anybody have any thoughts on the surge, and it's relativity to the MIL lamp?(bad plugs? bad coil pack? Engine Temp Sensor?)

Second, what are the ramifications of using single electrode plugs in the 3.4L motor? Only motor mod is a K&N panel filter added to the stock airbox at 30K.

Any advise is helpful. Thanks in advance...

The plugs gapped correctly? I believe it's .044 for the Taco.

I use the double ground on my 3.4L and have no problems. The nikkodenso brand are not too expensive. You might want to look at your wires or secondary coils. Haynes manual has got a good guide. The single ground plugs if anything should cause a loss in power, not a surge. Maybe you've got a timing issue.

Hello,

I've always been a fan of the idea of "if something just went wrong, what was the last thing I worked on? -- that's probably the root of the problem." If that doesn't help, try the oxygen sensor(s). I'd estimate half of all lower mileage (<100K) engine light activations are caused by 02 sensors needing replacement (don't quote me). Finally, if Toyota put dual electrode plugs in, you need to put the same or better in -- that's just the way the system was designed.
