| | tachometer problems hi i have an 82 toyota 4x4 with a 22r and i am experiancing some tach problems, my tachometer currently only seems to work when its warm outside. at night or in the morning when its cold it doesn't budge any sugestions?
I also am experiancing intermittent stalling problems ive checked my egr my throttle posistion for the a/c (wich only increases the iddle) and a buddy told me to change my fuel filter. any help would be greatly appreciated! |

| | Re: tachometer problems Does your truck not idle and constantly misfire when you start it when the motor is warm? Often (but it seems I have fixed the problem) when I go in a store and come back to my truck about 10 or 15 minutes later, my truck starts and it wont idle unless I hold on the gas, and then it misfires like crazy and the RPMs bounce all over the place. It's something failing in the smog system, I think it is the thermo sensor in the catalytic converter, or the 02 sensor, but I'm still not even sure.

| | Re: tachometer problems Well I'd change the filter just to start with unless you know it's not too old... It should be under the pass side on the frame rail just behind the cab if it's anything like an 84.
As for the tach, the signal comes off the coil, and goes straigh to the tach inside, pretty easy to rewire I'd think? Could just be old wire that doesn't like the cold. I have a problem like that in my starting system, in the winter it will click when I try to start it sometimes, but in the summer it never does.

| | Re: tachometer problems yes often but not always my truck will start but won't idle so i have to hold my pedal down to keep it from dying. I've been told before it may be the o2 sensor, but i haven't tested it yet. I replaced the fuel filter and will let you know if it worked. since its intermittent i won't know if it worked until i drive it a while. I'm currently looking into rewiring by tach thanks allot! |

| | Re: tachometer problems my 82 does the same thing. I have been asking around and trying to figure out what the problem is. Ive checked vacuum problems and its not that. I'm pretty sure its either the 02 sensor or the thermo sensor because the 02 sensor leans or richens the fuel mixture in the intake based on how much oxygen is in the exhaust...and if the sensor is reading wrong once the truck is warm, it will flood the carbeureator causing it to stall. Which makes sense because my truck seems like it is flooding when this happens. Same happens on long steep freeway hills. Hope this helps.
Update us (or just me I guess) on if you test or replace the 02 sensor, I'd like to know if it fixed it or not. Good luck |

| | Re: tachometer problems hi sorry it to so long to get back with the diagnosis, i replaced the fuel filter, but to no avail, then i rebuilt my carberator but to no avail, i was reluctant to test my oxegen sensor because i have a oxegen sensor warning light that tells me if its bad. I got very frusterated and started asking anyone and everyone why my truck was stalling out. I was told it was the idle circuit solinoid on the carberator. we tested its function and found it was ok, but after further diagnosis and resetting the solinoid we discovered it was the source of the problem. We asked another mechanic why the solinoid work fisically work but not function right. Long story short the female plug in the ECM (emmision control module) has really bad sodder connections and after time they crack and fail and the computer can no longer control the systems. I suppose this is a fairly common problem because the sodder points were really really bad, cracks and cold sodder joints. THE FIX: remove the ECM resodder the connections for the female connector and plug it back in. the computer is normallly under the driverside dash on the left. P.S. i still cannot fix my tachometer i have rmoved it and checked it but again to no avail. |

| | Glad you figured it out, do search for tachs I know there are a few write ups with pics on where to run the wires to on the back of the instrument panel etc. It's just batt power from your junction box, then a single wire from the coil to the tach...If rewiring doesn't work than the tach probably has seen better days.
