| | | Replacing Auto Hubs on 87 4Runner I am going to replace my auto hubs with manual (Aisin) and I was quoted 1 hour labor / wheel... But the Tech made a comment about the hub bearings not lasting very long...
Is this a problem or should I be looking for another Tech.. |

| | Re: Replacing Auto Hubs on 87 4Runner The hub bearings do not wear out like you were told. I have never had a problem with any of mine in over 18 years. What the guy might have meant were the wheel bearings. It would be a good time to repack the bearings and replace the brake pads if needed. Just swapping out the hubs though is rather easy. Do you have a set of hubs yet?

| | Re: Replacing Auto Hubs on 87 4Runner One hour per wheel? I could probably swap them both in 10 minutes....... Is he going to go through the hubs and check them out? I hope so for that amount of labor. How many miles?
Read this, it'll give you an idea about what's involved. http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/autohub/ |

| | | Re: Replacing Auto Hubs on 87 4Runner I have 250,000 on it and I have the hubs.. I had the brakes and rotors replaced 18 months ago... about 15k on them..
If it is that easy to replace them maybe I should try it myself or look around for other places... I am the big 60 now and I try not to do that stuff anymore.. but $180 in labor is not chump change to anybody.. Thanks Guys: Jim |

| | Re: Replacing Auto Hubs on 87 4Runner About the hardest part of doing the hubs are the cone washers. If you have done some before, you learn just how to do it, but the first timers usually struggle alittle. I use a brass punch and hit the ends of the studs with a hammer to jar them loose.
Good luck and if you decide to do it and have any problems, we can help you out.

| | Re: Replacing Auto Hubs on 87 4Runner I like to loosen the nuts a little, then tap-a-tap-a on the out side edge of the hub with a hammer till the cone washer pops out. Works great.
I'd check for any play in the wheel bearings and make sure they are greased, if there is some play it's not too bad to tighten them up a little. But changing out the hubs is a piece of cake. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
