| | | new, used, rebuilt or remanufactured? Hey guys I just recently purchased a 1994 Toyota pick up extended cab 4x4. Got it for $500 the engine has 250,000 miles and is in bad shape it needs to be replaced, and I am wondering what my best bet would be. Used, rebuilt, remanufactured or my other option is that I have a '71 Camero that has a bored out 455 with a racing cam and 4 barrel. Can this engine be switched with the 22RE, and is it a smart idea? |

| | Re: new, used, rebuilt or remanufactured? It depends. If you can find a used one cheap enough, I'd do that. Then take your old one and spend some time and rebuild that one.
I bought an old Toyota for $200 just for the engine (plus a great way to get a ton of spare parts). Then rebuilt my old and swapped it back in.
If you you have money and not the time to rebuild....then just get a remanufactured one.
A 455 is pretty heavy! |

As for the 22re, it really depends on yer budget a long-term plans. If you can spare the $$$ and plan to keep a loooong time, go newly reman. w/ 250k, it may have been rebult before, in which case your options for rebuilding might be limited. If you buy a used one, I would plan to either have that one rebuilt, OR to rebuild yours and swap in back in later. Otherwise you never know what you've got or how long it will last. |

No on the 455. Way too much fabing to make it work reliably. You'd have to put in heavier axles, tranny, etc. After $10K to $15K you might have a really tire-smok'n nose-heavy tow-truck! I would find a *reputable* Toy shop or engine shop and have the engine rebuilt... that way YOU know what you have. Or you might have someone like Ted at EB build you one. If you don't plan to keep the truck long, then you could take your chances with a purchase of a reman or find a boneyard version.

| | Re: new, used, rebuilt or remanufactured? x2 what Gnarls said.
since I don't know any Toyota shops around here, I went with a Jasper Engines reman longblock in mine. runs solid after 3 years. it was $1850 + the money spent on gaskets and materials and stuff.
My next engine will come from Ted at EB. They weren't doing production longblocks at the time, else that's what I would have in my truck right now.
I've built 5 engines in my life so far, including the 22R that I had in my truck before the Jasper. it was the only motor that didn't quite run properly, but I believe this was due to the fact that it had been torn down once or twice before I got the truck. |
