Default Tranny fluid temp light........................

Got a question for all you Toyota peeps...........

First the tech facts on what I have.....
92 Toyota 4 Runner
V6
Auto tranny 340H
AC
4 X 4
35" Thornbirds

As the story onfolds..........
Last Christmas, my tranny went out......no reverse. When I got to my shop monday morning, the truck went on the rack and the tranny came out. After realizing that rebuilding the tranny and transfer case would be around $1000 just for the parts.................decided to take the salvage yard route and get a used one. Got a used one for $500 and replaced the stock "Lexus High Stall Converter" with a new "low Stall". Changed the seals and filter. Put it back in and it runs/shifts fine..................

However.................
Around town isn't a problem but when I get out on the highway for awhile, the tranny "Fluid Temp Light" comes on. I pull over....wait five minutes...........and it goes out. I can get about 30 or 40 miles of highway before it comes back on. My old tranny, the light came on on me mybe once the whole time I had the truck.

I just used the tranny fluid we had on the shelf. Since the tranny and transfer case share fluid, should I use some sort of special high temp fluid...........who makes it? I have heard of tranny fluid for 4x4, but not sure the right/best to use.

Thanks in advance..............

What type of fluid did you use? If you use the wrong type, you will have problems.

Maybe your tranny cooler is plugged with mud? Do you have the extra cooler mounted off of the transfer case too?

When I was under the truck, I saw the extra cooler off to the side and removed it and cleaned it. I'm thinking that I need a high-temp fluid but don't know what would be the best to use.

Using high temp fluid is not a fix, you need to figure out what is causing the high temps and fix it. Did cleaning the cooler stop it from overheating?

I have towed 5K lbs on the highway for hundreds of miles with my 99 and never had the tranny temp light come on, so I don't think yours should with no trailer.
