fj 40 timing

I just bought 1974 FJ40 w/6cyl type f motor all stock. It runs bad, backfires,heats up, won't run more than 5 minutes and quits. When I go to check the timing I can't find any timing marks or pointer. I have a manual and it talks about an inspection cover, whicH I don't see. A mechanic said on the left side there was a little bead for timing. I don't see anything. I was going to try and time it by rotating dist. but the dist won't move. It has 1 bolt securing it in on the right hand side and like a "hose clamp" on the btm. when loosened the dist. hardly moves. On the left side of dist. it seems like there is a long slot but no bolt going thru it. I'm wondering if the dist. is in backwards?
but I don't understand no timing marks for 7 BTDC. ANy help?

The inspection cover is found at the rear of the motor on the right side, down low, above the starter motor. It's not very big. The timing marks are on the flywheel and can be very difficult to see. The hole in your distributor was probably the octane selector. not real sure what that thing does.
I haven't been able to find out the difference between f and 2f motors, but settings seem to be the same for both.
