I inherited a 1976 LC from my dad and am looking to get it road-worthy. Does anyone know where the VIN is on this year and model? We've checked the obvious places, but haven't located it yet. I have it on paperwork, but we need to verify it on the vehicle. Also, any 'practical' insight to this particular year/model? I'm trying to get an owner's manual, but not having much luck. Thanks for any help you might be able to send along - I'm at square one, so anything would be helpful!!
This year of FJ40 should have a data plate riveted to the left front door post and possibly one riveted to the firewall above the heater fan assembly which is in the engine compartment on the right-hand side. These older landcruisers actually used a serial number instead of a VIN.
If you look at the right front frame member on the outside, between the bumper and the grill, you should find a number stamped in like FJ40-??????, probably 6 digits after the dash. This is your VIN.

Kootenay is right, that's where the VIN number plate should be. I have a 1969 FJ40.
As for an owners manual, you might want to check out e-bay. There are tons of parts and things for sale for FJ's on there.
A good book for doing work on it, or simply as a reference is the Haynes Repair Manual. You might find a used copy, or buy it new at a book store. They might have to special order it, but it is still in print. I picked up the Hayes Automotive Repair Manual at Barnes and Nobel for around $25.00.
